Last Sunday, December 17, the people voted “against” the Proposal for a New Constitution prepared by the Expert Commission and the Constitutional Council.
Consequently, the current Constitution will continue governing the Chilean legal system and may be reformed in the future by the agreement of 4/7 of the members in office of the National Congress. It should be noted that the constitutional process of 2023 was enabled by a constitutional amendment to the Constitution currently in force, passed in January 2023.
